Understand Registration Length and Timelines

Learn how domain registration periods and timelines work

Registration length is the number of years the domain is registered with the domain registry at the time of purchase.

During checkout, you’ll see a dropdown that lets you select your preferred registration period, such as:

  • 1 year

  • 2 years

  • 3 years

  • 5 years

  • 10 years

The price updates automatically based on the option you choose.

Why registration length matters

Choosing the right registration length helps you:

  • Avoid early renewal reminders

  • Secure your domain for longer-term projects

  • Reduce the risk of accidental expiration

Longer registration periods are often preferred for established brands or long-term plans.

What happens after purchase

Once your domain is delivered:

  • The selected registration length transfers with the domain

  • You’ll manage renewals directly through your registrar

  • Renewal pricing and policies are set by the registrar, not Deqo

Deqo does not automatically renew domains after delivery.

Important things to know

  • Registration length is not the same as domain age

  • You can usually extend registration later through your registrar

Always check the expiration date in your registrar account after receiving your domain.

How long can a domain be registered for?

When you register or manage a domain on Deqo, your domain follows a standard lifecycle defined by registry and registrar policies. Understanding each stage helps you avoid service interruptions and maintain control of your domain.

Note: Exact timelines and fees may vary depending on the domain extension (TLD).

Registration

The domain lifecycle begins when a domain is successfully registered.

  • The domain becomes active and associated with your account

  • DNS services, email, and website hosting can be configured

  • The registration term typically ranges from 1 to 10 years, depending on the TLD

Once registered, the domain remains active until its expiration date unless renewed or transferred.

Renewal

Before the expiration date, the domain enters the renewal window.

  • Domains can be renewed at standard renewal pricing

  • Renewing extends the registration term and prevents expiration

  • Auto-renew settings (if enabled) help prevent accidental expiration

Renewal status and expiration dates are visible in your Registrar → Registrations / Renewals section.

Expiration

If a domain is not renewed by its expiration date, it enters an expired state.

  • The domain may stop resolving (website and email may stop working)

  • The domain may be placed on hold by the registrar

  • Ownership is not immediately lost

During this stage, renewal is often still possible.

Grace Period

After expiration, many domains enter a grace period.

  • The domain is typically inactive

  • Renewal is still possible at the regular renewal price

  • Services may be restored once the domain is renewed

Redemption (Restore) Period

If the domain is not renewed during the grace period, it may enter a redemption period.

  • Renewal is still possible, but requires a restoration fee

  • Restoration fees are set by the registry and are higher than standard renewals

  • Domains in this phase usually cannot be transferred

This phase is time-limited and should be avoided when possible.

Pending Delete

After the redemption period, the domain enters pending delete status.

  • The domain can no longer be renewed or restored

  • The domain is scheduled for deletion from the registry

  • Ownership cannot be recovered at this stage

This phase typically lasts several days.

Deletion and Availability

Once deleted from the registry:

  • The domain becomes available for registration again

  • It may be registered by anyone on a first-come, first-served basis

  • The previous owner permanently loses all rights to the domain

Important considerations

  • Transfer restrictions may apply for domains registered or transferred within the last 60 days

  • Some registrars or TLDs may introduce auctions or additional recovery steps

  • Timelines, fees, and availability vary by registrar and registry

Always monitor your domain status and expiration dates to avoid unintended loss.
